Qiu Anxiong

Qiu Anxiong is an artist based in Shanghai and a professor at the School of Design, East China Normal University. His ink-style animated trilogy New Book of Mountains and Seas (2006–2017) retells the modern world in the manner of an ancient Chinese bestiary, and is in the collections of MoMA and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

He has shown at the Biennale of Sydney, the São Paulo Biennial and the Met’s Ink Art exhibition. His recent work rethinks shanshui landscape painting through travel and fieldwork, from a journey along the Yangtze in 2025 to new silk paintings in which mythical beasts give way to drones. He studied at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute and the Kunsthochschule Kassel.
